It’s been three years. This year has been tough. I think part of the reason is simply reality setting in. I’m not expecting him to come home this year. And that’s made things difficult. So, crap. What am I going to do with the rest of my life? How am I going to survive on my own seeing as how I am far less awesome than most people I’ve met? I don’t know. Let’s think about something else. Forget that whole figuring everything out.

Let’s talk about popular music. I am using the term in a very broad sense. Music for people by people. I work as an admin at the moment (technically I am “part time temporary clerical support”). I have never been one to say we are defined by our work. You aren’t your job and you will be yourself even if you can’t do that work anymore. Still, you do that work 40 to 80 hours a week. That’s a long time. Each job has it’s own trials, joys, frustrations and creates a unique point of view. At one time if you had a profession there was a folk song about what you did. Whether you mined, fished, housewife-d or whatever it was there was a song with your unique point of view. From what I gather this doesn’t really exist any more. There are a few songs about “work”. Generic work. As if every person’s work is the same and we all therefore have the same view of “work”. The only exceptions I can think of off the top of my head are “Downeaster Alexa” by Billy Joel and possibly “Driving The Last Spike” by Genesis (more about historical events). However, most songs are simply about making money and not what we do. So, when did this happen? And why did this happen? And when am I going to have a song that I can sing which speaks to my struggles and successes as a part time temporary clerical assistant? Alright, probably never with the last one.

I have decided to ask the finest musical minds from around the world that I can contact. I know one from Canada and Japan. Two continents down. But, Jessica isn’t this procrastination. You’re darn right it is. This is one area where I do excel. And hey, if you do have an answer let me know.
